What’s the biggest mistake that people make when they’re trying to jump on the digital media bandwagon? They act before they do their homework. They hear that their competition is on this social media platform, or has that mobile app, and they think they need to get on board immediately to stay relevant. In fact, the only thing they accomplish is setting themselves up for disappointment, and wasting a lot of time and money.

The first step in creating any digital, social, or search marketing program is to understand the media landscape that’s directly relevant to your business. Just because Company X is doing it, doesn’t mean that it’s right for your organization.

Content is King, but Context is EVERYTHING. Do your homework and learn which platforms are going to reach your unique audience, which social media outlets are most conducive to disseminating your message, and make sure to understand how each of those platforms is used best.

After you’ve identified where you should be investing your time and effort, look to see what type of content is most engaging for your audience. Is your audience more visual? Do they prefer to read articles? Are they keen on sharing quick tips and funny quips? Is video their thing? By understanding what type of content resonates most with your audience, you’ll be ready to start creating your original content to share with them.
